<p>The third series of the Aston Martin Lagonda was basically the same as the <a href="http://www.quattro-porte.com/?p=111">Series 2 Lagonda</a>. It was introduced on the market in 1985 and already replaced by the restyled <a href="http://www.quattro-porte.com/?p=123">Series 4</a> in 1987. There&#8217;s not much to tell about this car, only that it featured a fuel injected engine instead of the carburettors equiped engines. This means that this Lagonda was more efficient with its fuel and also cleaner. No surprise that only 75 automobiles were produced, probably the most desirable Lagonda of the whole series.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Aston Martin Lagonda Series 4</strong></p>
<p>After more than 10 years of marketing the Lagonda, Aston Martin asked William Towns to facelift the car for the upcoming years. This redesign was the first major change since the launch of the Lagonda in 1976 and consisted of a new front end of which the pop-up headlights were removed in favour of three headlights at each side. Furthermore all the sharp edges were rounded off a bit, smoothing up the side by removing the character line and added side skirts and new larger alloy wheels. With all the changes Towns made, the car was actually looking much more modern and sleek. At the mechanics and interior remained mostly the same as in the previous car. The Series 4 Lagonda was introduced at the 1987 Geneva Motor Show and lasted until January 1990 when produced seized after another 105 cars. The Lagonda was not replaced by a successor.</p>

<p>After Alejandro de Tomaso took over control of Maserati, he almost instantly started working on a new Quattroporte. Italdesign had presented two show cars in 1974 and 1976 called the Medici I and II, based on these two cars the new Quattroporte was penned down by Giorgetto Giugiaro. At the 1977 Turin Motor Show the new Quattroporte was first shown to the public and delivery started in 1979 with two models: the 4200 and 4900. The 4200 which actually had a 4.1 litre engine was phased out later in the car&#8217;s life cycle. The Quattroporte III (called 4porte in the first years) was an artistocratic and very luxurious car with lavish full leather seats (from SALT Turin), meters of wood and lots of other extras such as airconditioning. The chassis was based on the other Quattro-Porte baring the name of Maserati&#8217;s new owner: the <a href="http://www.quattro-porte.com/?cat=7">de Tomaso Deauville</a>. In 1986 the last Quattroporte III&#8217;s were slightly redesigned, upgraded and called <a href="http://www.quattro-porte.com/?p=217">Royale</a>. Production seized in 1990 with more than 2,000 units produced.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Maserati Quattroporte Royale</strong></p>
<p>The Royale was introduced to Maserati&#8217;s clients late 1986 and was basically a Quattroporte III with some minor cosmetic changes and an ultra luxurious interior. The body of the car was slightly redesigned with more rounded off body panels, new wheels and the prominent silver center side skirt. The engine was uprated to 295 HP. Main luxus was however the interior: it featured beter soundproofing and more luxurious leather seats, new extras such as automatic climate controle, a cigar lighter, a portable phone and a bar for the rear passengers. The rear seats were separate and both fully adjustable, also both passengers got retractable wood-veneered tables in the side doors and two vermeil/pewter beakers stowed behind the central door pillars. The Quattroporte Royale was built on special order until 1990, when Maserati was sold by de Tomaso to Fiat Group. Fiat introduced a new 4-door Maserati in 1994: the <a href="http://www.quattro-porte.com/?p=221">Quattroporte IV</a>.</p>

After the start of adding a turbo to the Mulsanne, Bentley decided to create a specific model which was called only Turbo and added the R (for &#8220;Roadholding&#8221;). In 1985 the car was introduced to the market on the Geneva Motor Show. The biggest change compared to the <a href="http://www.quattro-porte.com/?p=41">Mulsanne Turbo</a> was the R for roadholding by adding a new suspension. The suspension changes transformed the new Bentley into a much sportier performance car than its predecessor. During the following 12 years, Bentley added all kinds of &#8216;new&#8217; technology such as fuel injection, ABS and a four speed automatic. Also the Turbo R had some minor cosmetic updated on both the body and the interior. In 1997 the Turbo R was replaced by the almost identical but much more powerful Turbo RT.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Lancia Thema 8.32 Series 1</strong><br />
Lancia hasn&#8217;t delivered the market with very interesting models since the 1980&#8242;s, but once in a while a mentally ill employee pops out an insane car such as the Delta HF Integrale or this Thema 8.32. In 1986 the Thema 8.32 was launched at the Turin Motor Show featuring a transverse-mounted Ferrari V8 engine. At that time the 8.32 was the fastest front wheel drive automobile in the market. The 2.9 liter V8 Ferrari motor was the exact same engine as mounted in the Ferrari 308 and Mondial Quattrovalvole. It was seriously fast and externally recognizable from the regular Thema featuring Ferrari style wheels, yellow badging/striping, a special grille and the retractable rear spoiler &#8216;hidden&#8217; in the deck lid. Internally the luxury was same as the LX versions, but with a special hand made wood-and-leather interior by Poltrona Frau. Some cars also had the for Lancia well-known alcantara interior. Maybe the Thema is not as special as some of the other cars featured on this site, but the 8.32 is really special car and a true Quattro-Porte!</p>

In 1989 the Thema model recieved a facelift after being in the market for 5 years. The Thema 8.32 got the same treatment and look a bit sleeker and modern. Technically the car was identical to <a href="http://www.quattro-porte.com/?p=186">the 8.32 Series 1</a>, same goes for the interior. The second series got a catalyst and therefore a little less power and performance. After another 5 years the production of the Lancia Thema seized, two years before the 8.32&#8242;s production came to an end. Less than 4,000 Tema 8.32 cars were delivered to their owners in which 64 limited editions. This special 8.32 was delivered in original Ferrari red paint and was only made as 32 cars of the 1st series and 32 cars of the 2nd series.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Porsche 989</strong><br />
In 1989 the Duo Bez-Lagaay came to Porsche AG: Dr. Ulrich Bez as Head of Engineering and Harm Lagaay as Head of Design. Dr. Bez was assigned a new project to create a 4 door sportsaloon because Porsche management figured that such a model could be a new market considering the success of the 928 (2+2 setup). Lagaay was responsible for the design with was based on the looks of a 911, only bigger. This turned out to be quite a challenge as the 989 was front engined with a V8 and had to be much bigger to accompany 4 adults. Both gentlemen did a hell of a job creating a nimble looking car that already had design features of the later 993 and the 1989 Panamericana study. At a glance the viewer would see a normal 911, which has 4 doors at a closer look. At bit comparible with the much later 2010 Aston Martin Rapide (established under CEO Dr. Bez).<br />
When Ulrich Bez left the company in 1991, the project lost its momentum. Also the Porsche management doubted that a four door sportsedan would be successful in the changed market of the early &#8217;90. The company waited until 2009 to introduce their first four door sportcar: the Panamera.</p>
